What Makes a Sapphic Event Feel Welcoming?
Share
A welcoming event starts before the door
An inclusive Instagram caption is a start, but useful information is what helps people decide whether they can attend. Visitors need to know who the event is for, how much it costs, where it takes place and what the atmosphere will be like.
Make arriving alone easier
Solo guests shouldn't need to guess where to stand or who to speak to. Simple things — a clearly identified organiser, optional introductions and a friendly welcome — can make a big difference.
Be clear about accessibility
Different venues have different physical layouts, noise levels, lighting and seating arrangements. Good listings should share confirmed information, not vague promises. If details aren't available, organisers should provide a clear contact route.
Set expectations about behaviour
Boundaries matter. People should understand how to raise a concern, where to find organisers and how photographs are handled. Community safety is a practice, not just a slogan.
Let people participate in their own way
Not everybody wants to dance, flirt or be the loudest person in the room. Giving people a mix of ways to join in can make events enjoyable for more of the community.
Why it matters
QueerMCR exists to help sapphics find friendship and belonging. We aim to make our events approachable, including for people attending alone. If there's something you need to know before booking, get in touch.
