How to Stay Connected After Your First Queer Event

The follow-up is where friendship starts

Events create introductions, but friendships grow when someone suggests seeing each other again. If you had a good conversation, you're allowed to say so. You don't need an elaborate message.

Keep the first message simple

Try: 'It was so nice meeting you yesterday! Still laughing about that quiz round.' Mention something you genuinely spoke about. There's no need to perform effortless coolness.

Make plans that are easy to say yes to

A coffee, walk, trip to a free exhibition or another group social can feel easier than an all-day commitment. Offer a specific idea and allow the other person to suggest something else.

Friendships aren't instant

People have work, relationships, burnout and busy calendars. A slow reply doesn't automatically mean they dislike you. Make room for different communication styles while also noticing whether interest is mutual over time.

Build a little routine

If you find a group that feels comfortable, returning regularly helps. You'll recognise faces, develop shared jokes and have something in common to talk about. Friendship is often built in ordinary repeated moments.

Keep the door open

Not every event results in a new best friend, and that's okay. Explore QueerMCR's next events whenever you're ready. Community isn't one perfect night; it's all the little connections that add up.
