Going to a Sapphic Event Alone? Your First-Timer Guide
Share
First of all: yes, you can absolutely come alone
When you see photos of groups laughing at an event, it's easy to assume everyone arrived together. They didn't. Plenty of sapphic friendships begin with someone nervously walking through a door on their own. The trick isn't to become instantly confident; it's to make the first ten minutes easier.
Choose your kind of event
If a club night feels overwhelming, start with a workshop, quiz or relaxed social. Structured activities give you a natural reason to speak to someone. If you love dancing and loud music, a party might actually feel easier because there's less pressure to make continuous conversation. Neither choice is more queer or more valid.
A practical plan for the first fifteen minutes
Check the venue, arrival time and transport before you leave. Wear something you're comfortable in. Give yourself permission to stay for just one activity rather than the entire night. When you arrive, ask an organiser where to go or whether they can help with introductions. You do not have to pretend you know everyone.
Conversation starters that don't feel like networking
Try 'Have you been to one of these before?', 'How did you hear about this?', or 'Can I join your team?'. Asking about the activity is often easier than inventing small talk. If a conversation fizzles out, that's normal. Getting a drink, joining a game or taking a breather isn't a failure.
What if you're anxious or need a break?
A good evening doesn't have to mean being social every second. Find out whether the venue has seating or a quieter area, and ask about accessibility ahead of time if you need more information. You can leave when you're ready. The goal is not to perform extroversion; it's to give yourself a chance to connect.
